The Billy app developer ("us", "we", or "our") operates the Billy mobile application (hereinafter referred to as the "Service").
This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal data when you use our Service and the choices you have associated with that data.
We use your data to provide and improve the Service. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. Unless otherwise defined in this Privacy Policy, the terms used in this Privacy Policy have the same meanings as in our Terms and Conditions.
Information Collection and Use
We collect several different types of information for various purposes to provide and improve our Service to you.
Types of Data Collected
Personal Data
While using our Service, we may ask you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information that can be used to contact or identify you ("Personal Data"). Personally identifiable information may include, but is not limited to:
- First name and last name (if you choose to provide it for your user profile)
- Usage Data (e.g., features used, frequency of use)
- Device Information (e.g., device model, operating system version)
- Receipt Images and Extracted Data (images you upload and the text/item data extracted from them)
- Contact Information (if you grant access to your contacts to add people to bills)
Usage Data
We may also collect information that your device sends whenever you use our Service ("Usage Data"). This Usage Data may include information such as your device's Internet Protocol address (e.g. IP address), device type, operating system version, the time and date of your use of the Service, the features utilized, and other diagnostic data.
Receipt Images and Extracted Data
When you use the AI-powered receipt scanning feature, you will upload images of your receipts. Our Service processes these images to extract information such as business name, items, prices, and dates. This data is processed to provide the core bill splitting functionality.
- Storage and Processing: Your receipt images are sent to our backend service for processing. We do not store your images on our servers after processing is complete. The extracted text data is sent back to your device. We never use your receipt images or the data from them to train our AI models. Processed data is stored on your device and, for some users, synced via your personal iCloud account.
Contact Information
If you grant the Service access to your device's contacts, we will use this information solely for the purpose of allowing you to easily add people from your contacts to bills within the app. We do not send any information from your contacts to our servers. Only the names and, if available, contact identifiers and thumbnails of individuals you explicitly add to a bill or group may be stored as part of that bill's or group's data. These are only stored on your local device or in your person iCloud storage.
Use of Data
Billy uses the collected data for various purposes:
- To provide and maintain the Service
- To process receipts and split bills
- To allow you to manage and save bills, groups, and trips
- To notify you about changes to our Service
- To allow you to participate in interactive features of our Service when you choose to do so
- To provide customer care and support
- To provide analysis or valuable information so that we can improve the Service
- To monitor the usage of the Service
- To detect, prevent and address technical issues
- To manage your subscriptions and provide premium features
Data Storage and Security
The security of your data is important to us. All of your personal data, including bills, groups, and people, is stored either directly on your device or in your personal iCloud account.
- Local Storage: By default, your data is stored locally on your device.
- iCloud Sync: If you have a premium subscription, your data (Bills, People, Groups, Trips, etc.) is synced across your devices using your person iCloud storage. This data is encrypted by Apple and we do not have access to the data stored in your private iCloud container.
- Receipt Image Processing: Receipt images are sent to our secure backend solely for processing. We employ industry-standard security measures to protect this data during transit and processing. The images are not stored or persisted on any server and are not used for AI model training. The processed receipt data is then returned to your device.
Data Retention
We will retain your Personal Data only for as long as is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy. All your data is stored on your device or in your iCloud account, so you have full control over it.
- Active Bills (Non-Premium): Data for the current, unsaved bill is stored locally and is overwritten when you scan a new receipt or clear the bill.
- Saved Bills (Premium): Data for saved bills is retained in your local device storage and your iCloud account as long as you maintain your premium subscription and do not delete the data.
- Receipt Images: We do not store your receipt images on our servers. Once a receipt image is processed to extract the text, it is not retained by our service. If you save a bill (premium feature), the image data may be stored on your device or in your iCloud, which you control.
- Draft Receipts: If receipt processing is interrupted, the image data may be saved as a draft on your device for you to retry later. This data is stored locally.
Transfer of Data
Your information, including Personal Data, may be transferred to and maintained on computers located outside of your state, province, country or other governmental jurisdiction for processing. These jurisdictions may have data protection laws that differ from yours.
If you are located outside the United States and choose to provide information to us, please note that we transfer the data, including Personal Data, to the United States for processing. We do not store this data in the United States; the transfer is for processing only.
Your consent to this Privacy Policy followed by your submission of such information represents your agreement to that transfer.
Billy will take all steps reasonably necessary to ensure that your data is treated securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy and no transfer of your Personal Data will take place to an organization or a country unless there are adequate controls in place including the security of your data and other personal information.
Disclosure of Data
Legal Requirements
Billy may disclose your Personal Data in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to:
- To comply with a legal obligation
- To protect and defend the rights or property of Billy
- To prevent or investigate possible wrongdoing in connection with the Service
- To protect the personal safety of users of the Service or the public
- To protect against legal liability
Service Providers
We may employ third-party companies and individuals to facilitate our Service ("Service Providers"), provide the Service on our behalf, perform Service-related services, or assist us in analyzing how our Service is used.
These third parties have access to your Personal Data only to perform these tasks on our behalf and are obligated not to disclose or use it for any other purpose. One such example is our receipt parsing API.
Analytics
We may use third-party Service Providers to monitor and analyze the use of our Service. This data is typically aggregated and anonymized.
Children's Privacy
Our Service does not address anyone under the age of 13 ("Children").
We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 13. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your Child has provided us with Personal Data, please contact us. If we become aware that we have collected Personal Data from children without verification of parental consent, we take steps to remove that information from our servers.
Your Data Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have certain rights regarding your personal data, including:
- The right to access, update or delete the information we have on you.
- The right of rectification.
- The right to object.
- The right of restriction.
- The right to data portability.
- The right to withdraw consent.
You can manage your data directly within the app (e.g., deleting bills, groups, trips, or your profile). For data stored in your person iCloud, you manage this through your Apple account. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact us.

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
We will let you know via email and/or a prominent notice on our Service, prior to the change becoming effective and update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy.
You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
